FHRAI s comment on Govt. considering to resume issuing tourist visas

“Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the hospitality industry has faced the severest of restrictions and closures, and has had to follow rigid protocols. As a result, over 20 to 30 per cent of the hotels and restaurants in the country have permanently shut down, and almost over 20 per cent of hotels and restaurants have still not opened since the first lockdown which was imposed in March 2020. The remaining 50 per cent that may have re-opened are continuing to run in losses and revenues are below 50 per cent of the pre-COVID19 levels. The Tourism and Hospitality industry that generated Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) to the tune of Rs.1,94,881 crores (US$ 29.96 billion) in 2019 is surviving with absolutely negligible FEEs since the last eighteen months. It’s a positive sign that the Ministry of Home Affairs is considering to resume issuing tourist visas. October to March is a tourist season in India and if the announcement comes soon it will certainly be a new ray of hope for the industry. After a hiatus of close to two years, the Hospitality industry is all set and eager to welcome tourists,” says Mr Pradeep Shetty, Jt. Hon Secretary, Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI).
