Austrian Airlines : Strong Increase in Passenger Volume of 7.3 Percent in May Compared to the Previous Year

Austrian Airlines significantly increased its passenger volume for the month of May 2018: Austria’s red-white-red carrier transported almost 1.3 million passengers, corresponding to a rise of 7.3 percent compared to May of 2017. This increase is mainly due to the airline’s expanded flight offering in Europe. The flight offering, measured in available seat kilometers (ASK) was up by 5.6 percent. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) increased by 7.2 percent. Capacity utilization of the flights (seat load factor) was at an average of 75.1 percent in May 2018, which is 1.1 percentage points higher compared to the prior-year month. The number of flights climbed by 5.0 percent in May 2018 to 13,830.

Andreas Otto, Member of the Executive Board and CCO of Austrian Airlines, commented: “Despite several bank holidays in May and thus less business travelers, we were able to improve our passenger numbers significantly.”

In the period January to May 2018, Austrian Airlines carried a total of roughly 5 million passengers, comprising a rise of 9.8 percent. The flight offering in available seat kilometers (ASK) was up by 4.1 percent. Revenue passenger kilometers increased by 7.1 percent compared to the first five months of 2017. Capacity utilization was up by 2 percentage points to 74.3 percent. The number of flights climbed by 5.3 percent in the period from January to May 2018 to 58,030.
