SpiceJet too small to bid for Air India: Ajay Singh

Speaking at a knowledge session during the CAPA India Aviation Summit 2018, Ajay Singh, CMD, SpiceJet stated that SpiceJet is too small as a carrier to bid for buying stakes of Air India. Singh said that Air India is a national asset and much bigger brand as compared to SpiceJet and we are comparatively miniscule to meet its services. According to Singh, carriers like Jet Airways, Vistara, Indigo and few foreign airlines can be the right fit for acquiring the stakes of Air India.

Talking about the Indian aviation industry outlook, Singh emphasised that despite the challenges of airport capacity, increasing fuel cost, miniscule aircraft to meet demands, etc., the traffic continues to grow and this growth is expected to stay strong in coming years. "With more fuel efficient aircraft like Neos and Max being inducted over next two years in India especially by LCCs and the push to include petroleum products under GST thereby targeting reduction in fuel prices, Indian aviation industry can see exciting times ahead in 2018," he explained.

Elaborating more on the scale of induction of aircraft in the industry Singh stated that with new aircraft the airlines should explore new routes especially Tier-II and III cities of India which continue to show great demand in terms of traffic. "Induction of a new aircraft on old routes will lead to bleed. Rational and profit oriented induction approach will help the smart redesign of the Indian aviation industry and help serve the under-served routes across the country just like carriers included under UDAN are performing this function," Singh added.
