Vistara plans international operations by 2nd half of the year

According to a report in The Economic Times, Vistara said that it plans to launch its international operations during the second half of 2018, and would achieve the mandatory 20 aircraft flying norm by March this year.
“We will be getting our 18th and 19th aircraft during February and the 20th will join our fleet in March. Thereafter, we will become a 22-aircraft airline by May and would launch international operations by the second half of this year,” said Leslie Thng, CEO, Vistara.
He, however, did not specify the routes his airline would launch flights. “We are studying a lot of routes, which include routes that have no direct connectivity from India and also other routes, which are high-traffic routes from India,” said Thng.
He further said that the carrier has the funding in place for the year, which means that funding for the launch of international operations is in place.
In a proposal to the aviation ministry, Vistara has said that it would launch international operations and has mentioned flights to Tehran as its first destination followed by Singapore.
He said that the airline would launch its international operations from its primary hub in New Delhi. “There could be secondary hubs, but the primary hub will remain in New Delhi,” said Thng.
The carrier also said that it would continue to focus on domestic operations and would launch more flights in this sector. “We are launching flights to Chennai from February. We will continue to add flights in the domestic sector, and more flights on the existing destinations,” he said.
Vistara currently operates a fleet of 17 Airbus 320s, and will be adding five more by May this year. It will also order more aircraft to launch its international operations. Thng, however, did not specify the type of aircraft they are looking at to launch international operations.
On Air India, he said that the promoters have to take a call on it. “The focus of our promoters
Tata Group and Singapore International Airlines -- are on Vistara and its expansion,” he said.
He also said that the airline is working on plans to improve its revenues, and ultimately its financials. “We are continuously reviewing to improve the RASK (revenue per available seat kilometre). Our revenue team has worked and we have seen improvement on that score. We are also working to rationalise our cost,” he said.
