Sikkim Tourism to finalise its new Tourism Policy soon

Sikkim Tourism will be finalising its new tourism policy soon. The draft policy will be finalised once it gets the government approval. This was informed by C Zangpo, Secretary-Tourism, Sikkim while talking to media in Delhi recently.

The Tourism Secretary said that there are certain recommendations for financial incentives for investors in the draft policy, which requires government approval. “There are certain financial incentives involved in the draft, so government approval is required. We are currently waiting for the government stamp for the policy,” he said.

When asked about the Gorkhaland Agitation and its fall out on tourist visitation into Sikkim, Zangpo said that the state’s tourism came to a complete standstill after the agitation started in mid June. “It affected quite adversely. Till June 18, Sikkim received 11.75 lac tourists. After that for next 100 days it was just zero,” he said.  “However, people have started coming back slowly,” he added.

State is giving highest priority to eco-tourism and homestay tourism, he said. The state government itself has supported over 730 homestays in the state and are a big hit with tourists. “Our focus on eco-tourism and homestay infrastructure has helped in curtailing the rural-urban exodus,” he added.

He expressed the hope that the new Pakyong greenfield airport will be receiving scheduled flights from December or latest by January, 2018. “ATR-42s and 72s will be operating to Pakyong,” he said.
