87% of Indian Travellers Prioritise Sustainable Tourism, Reveals Booking.com’s 2025 Report

As global attention turns towards sustainable living, Indian travellers are emerging as proactive contributors to eco-friendly tourism. According to Booking.com’s 10th edition of the Travel & Sustainability Report 2025, 87% of Indian travellers plan to travel more sustainably in the next 12 months, aligning closely with World Environment Day’s theme, “Ending Global Plastic Pollution.”

The report, based on insights from over 32,000 travellers across 34 countries, highlights a notable shift in Indian travel habits. Key sustainable actions include using greener transport (52%), reducing waste (51%), conserving energy (50%), cutting water usage (45%), avoiding wildlife-harming activities (48%), and making mindful food choices (49%). Additionally, 49% of travellers are prioritizing eco-certified accommodations.

Sustainability is also becoming a standard expectation, with 75% of Indian users wanting to filter tours and activities based on eco-credentials, followed by accommodations (74%), rental cars (72%), and flights (69%). While 61% believe sustainable options may be more expensive, there remains a strong willingness to opt for them when clearly labelled. When offered sustainable choices, 29% prefer eco-certified accommodations, 26% pick green tours, and others lean towards electric vehicles and low-emission flights.

Booking.com also revealed the top Indian destinations for sustainable stays, including Kanha and Khawasa in Madhya Pradesh, Panaji and Candolim in Goa, Agra, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Pune. Globally, cities like Winnipeg, Geneva, Hamburg, and Seoul were highlighted for their high share of eco-certified accommodations.
