93% of Indian Kids Want Holidays That Build Friendships and Cultural Discovery, Says Global Abu Dhabi Study

A new global survey commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has revealed a significant shift in the holiday preferences of Indian children, with a dominant 93% expressing a desire to engage in activities that help them make new friends while travelling.

The study, conducted among children aged 5 to 12, highlights a rising trend among Indian kids toward culturally enriching and socially interactive experiences during vacations. The findings point to a new generation of travellers who prioritise connection, curiosity, and meaningful exploration over passive recreation.

According to the data, over 75% of Indian children indicated a strong interest in visiting museums during their holidays, placing culture and education at the forefront of their travel expectations. Additionally, more than 90% expressed enthusiasm for exploring food markets—underscoring food as both a cultural and experiential motivator.

Adventure and active leisure also remain a high priority. An overwhelming 96% of the children surveyed said they want to visit water parks and participate in water sports. Other popular interests included exploring how people live in different parts of the world, visiting grand architectural landmarks, and trying activities like climbing lessons, with around 80% showing enthusiasm in these areas.

In response to the findings, DCT Abu Dhabi has launched a novel initiative: a “Kid-Recommended” seven-day itinerary developed in direct collaboration with children. Designed by kids for kids, the itinerary will feature theme parks, cultural institutions, zoo excursions, beach outings, and a variety of interactive experiences tailored to young travellers.

H.E. Nouf Mohamed Al-Bushlaibi, Executive Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications at DCT Abu Dhabi, said the initiative stems from a deeper understanding of what children genuinely value in a holiday.

“As both a parent and a marketer, I know how important it is to listen to children—to understand what excites them, what inspires them, and what makes travel memorable,” she said. “What they’ve told us is clear: they want connection, adventure, and the freedom to explore their stories. Abu Dhabi is that destination.”

The strategic move positions Abu Dhabi as a leading destination for family travel, catering to a demographic often overlooked in traditional tourism planning. With the focus on cultural engagement, social bonding, and interactive learning, DCT Abu Dhabi is redefining how destinations approach tourism for the next generation.

The full itinerary is expected to roll out in the coming weeks and will be promoted across digital and education platforms, further cementing Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a culturally rich, kid-friendly holiday hub.
