Amrit Bharat 2.0: A Budget-Friendly Alternative to Vande Bharat for Economical Rail Travel

Indian Railways is gearing up to cater to budget-conscious travelers with the introduction of Amrit Bharat 2.0, a non-air-conditioned cousin of the luxurious Vande Bharat trains. These new trains promise enhanced facilities and comfort, bridging the gap between affordability and modern rail travel.

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai recently showcased prototype coaches for the sleeper and general classes, which Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inspected. Designed in an orange and grey color scheme similar to Vande Bharat trains, Amrit Bharat 2.0 offers improved amenities such as dedicated divyangjan-friendly toilets, toilet indicator lights, and modular designs made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic for better hygiene and maintenance.

Key operational advancements include semi-automatic couplers for easier attachment and detachment, electro-pneumatic brake systems for quick application, and fully sealed gangways for efficient coupling and decoupling. The coaches also feature vacuum evacuation systems, real-time wheel and bearing monitoring through an onboard condition monitoring system (OBCMS), and external emergency lighting for critical situations.

Passengers can enjoy thoughtful features such as dedicated charging sockets with USB A and C-type ports, foldable snack tables, mobile holders, and bottle holders. Enhanced seat and berth designs ensure a comfortable journey, while each coach is equipped with four toilets—two Indian-style and two Western-style. Additionally, public address and passenger information systems, along with emergency connectivity to the loco pilot, add to the safety and convenience.

With a maximum operating speed of 130 kmph, the Amrit Bharat 2.0 train will have 22 coaches, offering a viable alternative to high-end travel. Production is underway, with 50 trains slated to roll out in phases over the next two years, signaling a significant step towards making modern rail travel accessible to all.
