Tourism New Zealand has identified India as a key source market, with significant potential for growth in international arrivals, particularly during the off-peak season. As preparations begin for Kiwi Link India in July, insights reveal that 75% of Indian travelers actively considering a visit to New Zealand are open to traveling between March and November—making India the third-highest market for off-peak travel interest globally.
Angela Blair, General Manager for the International Market at Tourism New Zealand, emphasized the importance of India in the country’s tourism strategy. “India is an incredibly important source market for New Zealand tourism and represents a significant opportunity for future international arrivals growth, particularly in the off-peak,” she stated. The agency aims to increase year-round arrivals from India, with a focus on key festive and holiday periods such as Diwali in October-November and the Indian summer break between April and June.
Blair highlighted the role of travel agents in driving bookings, stressing the need to strengthen ties with the Indian travel trade sector. “Many holiday visitors from India book through a travel agent, so it’s important we meet with the travel trade sector in India to grow relationships and ultimately book more holidays to New Zealand. We will also be launching more activities throughout the year to help potential Indian visitors fall in love with New Zealand’s landscapes and people,” she added.
According to the latest data, over 14 million people in India are actively considering a visit to New Zealand, with 64% placing it at the top of their travel bucket list. In November, total arrivals from India surged to 129% of pre-Covid levels, with holiday arrivals reaching 109% of pre-pandemic numbers. Additionally, Indian holiday visitors tend to be high spenders, averaging $5,927 per trip—surpassing the overall average holiday visitor spend of $5,171.
Indian tourists are particularly drawn to New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes, adventure activities, unique cultural experiences, and welcoming hospitality. With strategic efforts to promote year-round travel, Tourism New Zealand is optimistic about strengthening its position in the Indian market and attracting more visitors in the coming years.
