Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced plans to develop nine new tourism destinations across the Union Territory, hoping to ease pressure on popular spots like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg. He expressed optimism about securing funding from multilateral agencies, including the World Bank, to develop these destinations.
Addressing a tourism event, Abdullah highlighted challenges, particularly the high cost of air tickets to Kashmir, and expressed hope that the upcoming inauguration of the direct train service by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would provide relief. The CM also discussed his government’s vision to expand tourism infrastructure beyond the valley, including Jammu’s largely untapped tourism potential.
In response to a question from our editor about the long-standing neglect of Jammu’s tourism, Abdullah acknowledged the region’s immense potential and emphasized the need to promote it more effectively. He mentioned key attractions like Shiv Khori, Bhadarwah, and the Chenab Rail Bridge—the world’s highest railway bridge, all of which are located in the Jammu region. He noted that these sites, along with many serene and unexplored destinations, could become major draws for tourists. Abdullah stressed the need to build infrastructure to enhance the traveler’s experience, ensuring that they leave with a desire to return.
The CM emphasized that the development of the nine new destinations would alleviate congestion in popular valley locations and unlock tourism in lesser-known areas of Jammu. He confirmed that the state government has already worked on the nine proposed sites, focusing on necessary infrastructure like connectivity, electricity, and water, with the support of multilateral funding.
Abdullah revealed that the World Bank has agreed to fund the preparation of project reports, with an estimated ₹5,500 crore investment needed for infrastructure development. Once completed, the government plans to invite private investment in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Furthermore, the CM welcomed potential investments in hotels and tourism-related infrastructure, including helicopter services and electric vehicles to enhance connectivity. He also addressed the challenges posed by increasing tourist volumes with the launch of the new Vande Bharat train service, emphasizing the need for careful planning to ensure the sustainability of tourism growth.
