Malaysia Airlines Resumes Chengdu Flights, Firefly Adds ASEAN Routes as MAG Boosts Growth

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has announced a major expansion of its network and in-flight services, marking a significant step in its strategy to position Malaysia Airlines among the world’s Top 10 global airlines by 2030. The Group will resume flights to Chengdu, launch new regional routes through Firefly, increase frequencies across key markets including India, and introduce innovative dining options onboard.

Starting 9 January 2026, Malaysia Airlines will operate daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU), expanding its Greater China network to seven destinations. This move comes as travel demand between Malaysia and China continues to rise, further boosted by the recently introduced reciprocal visa-free entry. Meanwhile, Firefly will begin new jet services from Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 to Krabi, Siem Reap, and Cebu in November 2025, offering travellers more seamless connections to popular ASEAN destinations.

The Group is also strengthening its presence in South Asia, with increased services from Trivandrum rising from five to seven weekly flights starting 1 December 2025, and Ahmedabad increasing from four to five weekly flights beginning 26 October 2025. Additional frequency boosts are expected across ASEAN, South Asia, China, Australia, and New Zealand, reinforcing MAG’s role as a gateway to Asia and beyond.

In addition to expanding connectivity, Malaysia Airlines is enhancing its onboard dining with the introduction of its first vegetarian satay, a fresh addition that reflects evolving customer preferences while staying true to the airline’s hallmark of Malaysian Hospitality.

Commenting on the developments, Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of MAG, said the initiatives highlight the Group’s confidence in the future of travel. “With these new routes and expanded frequencies, MAG is strengthening its role as the gateway to Asia and beyond, making it easier for travellers to discover top destinations. At the same time, we remain focused on delivering a premium in-flight experience that reflects our heritage and meets evolving customer expectations,” he said.

By combining expanded regional connectivity with elevated in-flight offerings, MAG is positioning itself as a leading force in Asian aviation, driving both tourism and business travel while adding value for passengers and the nation.
