A powerful cloudburst struck Dehradun late on the night of September 15–16, unleashing torrential rains that triggered flash floods, landslides, and widespread devastation across the city. The popular tourist zones of Sahastradhara and Maldevta were among the worst hit, with roads washed away, houses and shops severely damaged, and connectivity to multiple regions cut off. The Tamsa river overflowed, inundating parts of the historic Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple and leaving devotees in shock, while surrounding localities reported dangerously rising water levels.
Authorities have ordered the closure of all schools as rescue and relief operations intensify. Teams from the NDRF, SDRF, police, and PWD are working round the clock to evacuate stranded residents and clear debris from key routes. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Kesarwala and Maldevta to personally assess the situation and assured citizens of swift relief and rehabilitation measures.
Tragically, at least four people have lost their lives, while two others remain missing. Dozens of families have been displaced and shifted to temporary shelters set up by the administration. The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days, raising fears of further flooding and landslides.
Residents and travelers are being urged to remain on high alert, avoid riverbanks and landslide-prone areas, and strictly follow official advisories as Uttarakhand confronts yet another extreme weather disaster.
