Visa-Free Entry Drives Record Tourism Boom in Sri Lanka

India Remains Top Source Market with 22% Share of Arrivals

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is witnessing a remarkable resurgence, powered by the government’s visa-free entry initiative for Indian travellers and enhanced air connectivity from major Indian cities. The island nation has earned over USD 2.3 billion in tourism revenue up to August 2025, marking one of its strongest recoveries in recent years.

From January to September 2025, Sri Lanka welcomed 1,725,494 tourists, of which 375,292 were from India, reaffirming India’s position as the top source market, contributing 22% of total arrivals. Industry experts attribute this growth to simplified entry processes, competitive airfares, and Sri Lanka’s renewed marketing focus on South India.

Currently, SriLankan Airlines operates 88 weekly flights connecting nine Indian cities, while IndiGo and Air India further enhance seamless access. Together, these links have opened new opportunities for leisure, weddings, and MICE tourism.

The upbeat figures and optimistic outlook were shared during recently concluded roadshows in Madurai, Coimbatore, and Chennai, where Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) and Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) showcased the island’s growing appeal as a year-round destination.
