India Mulls New Aviation Rules on Power Banks Amid Safety Concerns

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is reportedly reviewing airline safety protocols related to carrying power banks on flights, following multiple instances of overheating and in-cabin smoke alerts globally. The move comes after carriers raised concerns about inconsistencies in enforcement and the rising number of lithium-ion battery incidents across domestic and international routes.
If implemented, the new guidelines may include stricter watt-hour limits, mandatory declaration of power banks at security, and clearer passenger advisories — ensuring that no power bank is stowed in check-in baggage under any circumstances.
While such steps are aimed at enhancing safety, travel trade experts believe the policy will also influence airport handling, travel-kit sales, and operational processes for frequent business travellers and group movements. Airlines are expected to introduce digital reminders at check-in and boarding to align with new compliance measures.
The proposed revision follows similar actions by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which have already tightened lithium battery carriage norms.
