Government Launches Tribal Homestay Development Initiative Under PMJUGA to Boost Responsible Tourism

The Ministry of Tourism has announced new efforts to promote responsible tourism and enhance livelihood opportunities in India’s tribal regions through the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PMJUGA), a dedicated sub-scheme under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme.

The initiative aims to develop and renovate homestays in tribal areas, enabling local communities to participate directly in the tourism value chain while preserving their cultural heritage and environment. According to Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, projects worth INR 17.52 crore have been approved under this scheme so far, though funds are yet to be disbursed.

Under the PMJUGA scheme, eligible tribal households and communities can avail financial assistance for homestay creation and related infrastructure development. The funding includes up to INR 5 lakh for village community facilities, INR 5 lakh for the construction of two new rooms in each eligible household, and up to INR 3 lakh for renovation of existing rooms to meet tourism standards.

The scheme is designed to empower tribal communities by generating sustainable income through tourism, encouraging visitors to experience authentic indigenous lifestyles, crafts, and cuisine. By blending cultural preservation with tourism-driven livelihood, the project aligns with India’s broader vision of inclusive and sustainable tourism growth.

With the implementation of PMJUGA, the Ministry hopes to strengthen tribal economies while positioning rural India as a unique hub for community-based tourism experiences.
