Bangladesh Temporarily Suspends Non-Essential Visas for Indian Travellers Amid Security Concerns

Bangladesh has announced a temporary suspension of visas for Indian nationals travelling for non-essential purposes, citing security concerns and heightened sensitivities ahead of the country’s general elections scheduled for 12 February 2026.

The decision, communicated on 8 January 2026, instructs several Bangladesh diplomatic missions in India, including those in New Delhi, Kolkata and Agartala, to halt the issuance of tourist and other non-essential visas. Business and work visas are exempt from the suspension and will continue to be processed.

The move has been described as a precautionary step taken in view of security considerations rather than a long-term policy change. Authorities have indicated that the temporary measure is aimed at ensuring the safety of diplomatic staff and travellers amid regional tensions and recent incidents near diplomatic premises.

As political activities intensify in the run-up to the elections, officials have stressed that the restriction is not targeted at any specific group but is intended to minimise risks linked to non-urgent cross-border travel during the sensitive pre-election period.

Visa and consular services remain operational at Bangladesh missions in Mumbai and Chennai. However, the suspension at other key centres is expected to impact short-term travel, tourism and personal visits, with travel agents already reporting delays and disruptions.

Both countries are continuing engagement through official channels to manage the situation and ensure that essential travel and bilateral cooperation remain unaffected.
