Germany Grants Visa-Free Airport Transit to Indian Passport Holders

Germany has announced a visa-free airport transit facility for Indian passport holders, a move that is expected to make international travel significantly smoother and strengthen people-to-people engagement between the two countries.

The decision was announced during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s official visit to India from January 12 to 13, marking his first visit to the country and his maiden tour of Asia after assuming office. The announcement formed part of the broader India-Germany joint understanding aimed at deepening strategic and human-centric cooperation.

Under the new arrangement, Indian travellers transiting through German airports en route to a third country will no longer be required to obtain a separate transit visa, provided they remain within the international transit zone. The measure is expected to reduce procedural delays, paperwork and costs, making German aviation hubs more accessible for Indian travellers.

Both sides underlined that the initiative will facilitate mobility for students, professionals, tourists and business travellers, while reinforcing people-to-people ties — a cornerstone of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership. The leaders reiterated that closer human connections are essential to sustaining long-term cooperation across economic, educational and cultural domains.

The two governments also acknowledged the growing presence of the Indian community in Germany and its contribution to the country’s economy, innovation ecosystem and cultural landscape. Emphasis was laid on expanding cooperation in education, research, skill development, vocational training, culture and youth exchanges to further strengthen mutual understanding.

Officials clarified that the visa-free transit facility does not permit entry into Germany or the Schengen area, and travellers intending to exit the airport or stay in the country will still require appropriate visas.

The policy shift is being seen as a practical and confidence-building step that reflects the evolving maturity of India-Germany relations and the shared commitment to making global mobility more efficient, secure and people-friendly.
