Air India Unveils Custom Cabin Interiors on First Made-for-Air India Boeing 787-9

Air India has unveiled the custom-designed cabin interiors of its first line-fit Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, marking a key milestone in the airline’s ongoing fleet transformation under the Vihaan.AI programme. The aircraft, registered VT-AWA, was delivered to Air India from Boeing’s Everett, Washington factory on 11 January 2026 and will enter commercial service on 1 February 2026 on the Mumbai–Frankfurt route.

Designed exclusively for Air India and installed directly on Boeing’s production line, the new interiors represent a significant upgrade over the airline’s existing widebody cabins. The three-class configuration spans Business, Premium Economy and Economy, featuring enhanced comfort and technology across all classes. Business Class cabins offer suites with direct aisle access, fully flat beds, 17-inch 4K QLED HDR screens, wireless charging and Bluetooth headphone pairing. Premium Economy provides greater pitch and adjustable leg rests, while Economy includes ergonomic seats with individual 4K screens.

The cabin design, developed with global design partner JPA Design, reflects Air India’s refreshed brand identity through a palette of soft creams, reds, golds and purples, and incorporates mood lighting inspired by Indian wellness traditions, engineered with Tata Elxsi to support passenger comfort across time zones.

Air India plans to roll out the new interior standard across its Boeing 787 fleet. In addition to 19 more 787-9s due with similar cabins, the airline is retrofitting all 26 existing 787-8 aircraft with the upgraded design and inflight entertainment systems, with the retrofit programme expected to be completed by mid-2027.

The new Dreamliner launch aligns with Air India’s broader strategy to elevate the passenger experience on long-haul routes and strengthen its position in competitive international markets.
