Tourism Malaysia Targets 2.1 Million Indian Arrivals; Eyes Tier 2 & 3 Connectivity Expansion

  • Tourism Malaysia has set an ambitious target of attracting 2.1 million Indian tourists, with a focused strategy on enhancing air connectivity and strengthening destination visibility across India.

Speaking in the capital, Ahmad Johanif Mohd Ali, Director, Tourism Malaysia Delhi, said improving accessibility remains central to the 2026 roadmap.

“Accessibility is critical in influencing travel decisions. We are encouraging both Malaysian and Indian carriers to expand services, particularly from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Airlines will evaluate route viability based on demand and ROI, and our responsibility is to stimulate that demand,” he said.

Boosting Visibility & Brand Recall

Tourism Malaysia is intensifying promotional campaigns to enhance recall among Indian travellers. This includes advertising initiatives and participation in key sporting and lifestyle events across India to ensure sustained brand presence.

“Our objective is to ensure that when Indian travellers think of an international holiday, Malaysia comes to mind first,” Ahmad Johanif added.

Strengthening Trade Engagement

The tourism board is also expanding engagement with Indian tour operators and travel agents through seminars, destination training sessions, and familiarisation trips to Malaysia. The aim is to strengthen product knowledge and encourage the development of competitive Malaysia-focused packages.

Industry stakeholders view the combined focus on connectivity expansion and trade partnerships as a strategic move to consolidate Malaysia’s position in the fast-growing Indian outbound market.
