ATOAI to Draft National Risk Management Roadmap for Adventure Tourism*

Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) is set to push for a structured and safer future for India’s fast-growing adventure tourism sector, with a focused seminar on “Indian Adventure Tourism: Risk Management” scheduled in New Delhi on May 18.

At a time when the global adventure tourism market is estimated at USD 683 billion, India is positioning itself to emerge as a leading destination in this high-growth segment. However, industry stakeholders believe that safety, standardisation and risk management will be critical in shaping this growth story.

The upcoming ATOAI initiative is expected to go beyond discussions, culminating in the formulation of a National Roadmap for Adventure Tourism Risk Management—a move that could bring greater uniformity in safety protocols, regulatory mechanisms and operational standards across states.

Highlighting the importance of the initiative, the ATOAI President said, “India’s immense adventure tourism potential must be anchored in robust risk management and uncompromising safety standards. This seminar is a significant step towards building a unified, future-ready framework that inspires confidence among all stakeholders.”

Industry experts point out that while multiple safety guidelines already exist, the lack of consistent implementation and monitoring remains a key challenge. The proposed roadmap aims to address these gaps through a more cohesive framework covering land, water and air-based adventure activities, along with clearer norms around insurance, legal liability and compliance.

According to ATOAI, strengthening risk management practices is essential not only for traveller safety but also for building investor confidence and enhancing India’s credibility in the global adventure tourism market. The association has set an ambitious vision of placing India among the top 10 global adventure tourism destinations by 2034.

The seminar will bring together policymakers, state tourism representatives, industry leaders and international experts to deliberate on best practices and actionable strategies. It will also underline the role of media in shaping public perception and promoting responsible tourism.

With adventure tourism gaining traction among Indian and international travellers alike, the outcome of this initiative could play a defining role in setting the direction for the sector’s long-term, sustainable growth.
