Chhattisgarh Positions Itself as India’s Next Eco & Tribal Tourism Frontier

Chhattisgarh is sharpening its tourism pitch around authentic cultural experiences and untouched natural landscapes, positioning itself as one of India’s most promising emerging destinations, according to Vivek Acharya.

With a strong presence at the 15th edition of the Great Indian Travel Bazaar in Jaipur, the state is actively engaging with both domestic and international travel trade to expand its footprint. A delegation of over 30 registered tour operators from Chhattisgarh participated in structured B2B meetings, each clocking more than 25 meetings per day—signalling strong market interest in the destination.

At the core of Chhattisgarh’s tourism strategy lies its unique ethnic identity, with more than 42 tribal communities offering immersive cultural experiences rarely found elsewhere in India. This, combined with its rich eco-tourism assets—waterfalls, forests and largely unexplored landscapes—forms the backbone of its positioning.

The state is also looking to tap into international markets through Buddhist tourism, particularly targeting Southeast Asia. The site of Sirpur, associated with Lord Buddha, is emerging as a key circuit, already drawing increasing foreign interest. Recent data indicates a growing traction, with around 7.5 lakh visitors recorded in the circuit and a noticeable rise in international tourists, including visitors from China.

A major shift enabling this push is the improved accessibility and opening up of previously restricted areas. Officials highlight that regions once affected by security challenges are now accessible, offering pristine, unexplored destinations that can drive future tourism growth.

The focus now is on converting trade engagement into tangible footfall, with early feedback from tour operators indicating strong business interest and positive response to the state’s offerings.

Chhattisgarh’s message to the global travel trade is clear: beyond conventional destinations, the state offers authentic, experiential tourism rooted in culture, nature and discovery—a proposition increasingly aligned with evolving traveller preferences.
