India Overhauls OCI Rules with Uniform Fees, Tighter Compliance

India has revamped the Overseas Citizen of India framework after over a decade, with new rules effective April 1, 2026. Announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the reforms introduce a uniform global fee—USD 275 for fresh overseas applications and ₹15,000 within India—along with USD 25 for re-issuance. OCI cardholders must now update passport details within 90 days, with delays potentially attracting penalties. The changes also ease certain eligibility and residency requirements, aiming to simplify processes while strengthening compliance and digital systems, as India looks to modernise engagement with its global diaspora.
