The Telangana Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance the infrastructure at the historic Khammam Fort, with a budget of Rs 29 crore aimed at attracting more tourists. The fort, located in the heart of Khammam city, was originally built by the Kakatiya rulers in 950 AD and later developed by the Velama kings, Musunuri Nayaks, and Qutub Shahi rulers, reflecting a unique architectural blend of multiple eras and religions.
A key feature of the plan includes the construction of a 200-metre ropeway, costing Rs 16 crore, to transport visitors from the foothills to the top of the fort. The ropeway will be complemented by a multi-level parking area, tourist waiting hall, food court, children’s play area, adventure activities, water fountain, and improved lighting at the base station.
At the upper station, the fort will feature a 20-seat dynamic cinema, two watchtowers, viewpoints, and selfie points overlooking the scenic Munneru vagu river. An additional Rs 1 crore has been allocated to renovate the fort’s steps for easier access.
Currently, Khammam Fort sees about 200 to 300 daily visitors. With these new developments, TTDC is confident that the site will attract a significantly larger number of both domestic and international tourists, making Khammam Fort a prime destination in Telangana’s tourism circuit.
