KS Hotels and HMD Asia have announced the acquisition of La Résidence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, Laos, and La Résidence D’Angkor in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Both iconic properties, previously owned and managed by Belmond, are set to continue their legacy under HMD Asia’s management, with La Résidence Phou Vao’s transition effective November 1, 2024.
La Résidence Phou Vao, nestled atop the UNESCO Heritage hill known as Phou Vao, or “the hill of kites,” offers guests panoramic views of Luang Prabang and an immersive cultural experience tied to the area’s royal history. Guests can explore the enchanting surroundings, where generations ago, Lao princes would ascend the hill to fly kites. Under HMD Asia’s management, this celebrated property will continue to operate as usual, maintaining its renowned service and ambiance.
Meanwhile, La Résidence D’Angkor, situated along the riverside in Siem Reap, remains closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen in the fourth quarter of 2025. The charming property, designed with traditional architecture amid lush gardens, will once again offer its guests proximity to the vibrant town of Siem Reap and the awe-inspiring temples of Angkor Wat.
Anthony Lark, Executive Director of HMD Asia and an experienced hotelier with a background at Amanresorts and Trisara, expressed his enthusiasm for the transition: “HMD Asia is delighted to be taking over management of the iconic La Résidence hotels. We feel a deep sense of honour and responsibility in managing these beautiful small hotels and are excited to continue their legacy of service and attention to detail while developing unique guest experiences.”
Owned by Cambodian entrepreneur Sokoun Chanpreda, HMD Asia is known for its dedication to high-end hospitality in Southeast Asia. With this acquisition, the company aims to honor the heritage of La Résidence hotels while enhancing them as premier destinations that celebrate local culture and offer distinctive experiences to guests.
