The Nagaland Tourism Association (NTA) recently organized a program in Mopungchuket village, Mokokchung district, aimed at promoting sustainable tourism practices across Nagaland. The event gathered local leaders, tourism stakeholders, and community members to discuss and advocate for sustainable tourism models that preserve Nagaland’s cultural and natural heritage.
Speaking at the event, NTA President Vimeto Vakha emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism for future generations. “Sustainable tourism is essential for preserving our unique cultural and natural heritage,” he stated, highlighting Mopungchuket’s success as a grassroots tourism model achieved through local dedication and government support. Vakha called on the government to bolster similar initiatives across the state to ensure a sustainable future for Nagaland’s tourism sector.
NTA urged the government to enhance support for sustainable tourism efforts that celebrate Nagaland’s rich cultural and natural landscape. They emphasized the importance of policy frameworks and financial support for community-led tourism projects, which not only create economic opportunities but also help protect local biodiversity and cultural traditions.
The program featured panel discussions and interactive sessions led by NTA President Vimeto Vakha and General Secretary Veshehu Kezo. Local tourism pioneers shared successful sustainable practices from Mopungchuket, renowned for its cultural heritage preservation, environmental conservation efforts, and welcoming hospitality.
Discussions also focused on creating training and development opportunities for local youth, illustrating how sustainable tourism can provide employment and help prevent migration by offering viable livelihoods within the community. NTA representatives expressed optimism that, with increased government support, Nagaland could become a model of sustainable tourism in Northeast India.
NTA also announced plans to advocate for further government involvement in building eco-friendly infrastructure and supporting training programs that empower local communities. “Our goal is to establish Nagaland as a sustainable tourism destination, attracting travelers who value authentic experiences while contributing to the preservation of Nagaland’s unique identity,” NTA stated.
