ATOAI welcomes opening of new trekking routes and peaks in Uttarakhand

Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) has welcomed the opening of 30 unscaled peaks and 10 high-altitude trekking routes by the Uttarakhand government. “This is a huge milestone and we appreciate the Government of Uttarakhand for taking the step to make Uttarakhand one of the top adventure destinations,” it said.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had in 2019 issued a circular for opening 137 peaks across Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and J&K. The order could not be implemented immediately in Uttarakhand as the forest department sought time for the same.

Considering various factors, the forest department found 30 peaks appropriate for mountaineering and another 10 peaks for high-altitude trekking. “An order in this regard has been issued,” said an official note.

ATOAI’s officiating president Vaibhav Kala said it was great to have worked with Uttarakhand on the trekking guidelines and ATOAI is hoping for huge promotion of mountaineering in the state.

He lauded the recent decision of no extra fees on expedition groups and Indian Mountaineering Foundation’s announcement to share 25 per cent of expedition fees with the Uttarakhand forest department.
