Advanced Cardiac Procedure in Chennai Highlights India’s Growing Medical Tourism Potential

In a significant clinical achievement, Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, has successfully treated a 71-year-old patient with multiple co-morbidities and two life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias using advanced, minimally invasive electrophysiological procedures.

The patient, with a complex medical history including diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, prior bypass surgery, heart failure, and an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and Ventricular Tachycardia (VT)—both serious heart rhythm disorders.

Managing both conditions simultaneously is highly challenging and typically requires prolonged procedures under general anesthesia. However, after a multidisciplinary evaluation, the medical team opted for a single-session, dual ablation approach under conscious sedation, significantly reducing procedural risk.

The patient underwent cryoballoon ablation for AF and radiofrequency (RF) substrate-based ablation for VT using high-density 3D electroanatomical mapping and real-time imaging technologies. The entire procedure was completed within three hours without the need for surgical incisions or mechanical ventilation.

The patient made a smooth recovery and was discharged the following day.

Dr. Deep Chandh Raja, Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Kauvery Hospitals, said that advancements such as cryoablation and high-resolution mapping systems are enabling precise and efficient treatment of complex arrhythmias, even in high-risk elderly patients.

Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, emphasized the hospital’s focus on delivering international-standard cardiac care through advanced technology and expert clinical teams.

The case highlights how innovations in cardiac electrophysiology are making complex treatments safer, faster, and more accessible. It also underscores India’s growing potential in medical tourism, particularly in specialized and cost-effective cardiac care.
