Japan is fast emerging as one of the most sought-after destinations for Indian travelers, with Agoda reporting a 68% year-on-year increase in searches between May 15 and August 15, 2025, compared to the same period last year. The data points to a surge in interest not only for Japan’s traditional urban hubs but also for scenic and leisure destinations across the country.
Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto continue to dominate search trends, with Tokyo seeing a 59% rise, Kyoto up by 53%, and Osaka recording a remarkable 158% year-on-year increase. Osaka’s strong growth underscores its growing appeal, bolstered by attractions such as Universal Studios Japan and the nearby Nara deer park. Beyond these top three, Fujikawaguchiko (+36%) and Sapporo (+18%) featured in the top five, while Hakone (+46%), Okinawa (+47%), Fukuoka (+14%), Yokohama (+20%), and Nagoya (+41%) completed the top ten list. Notably, Nagoya entered the ranking for the first time this year, replacing Narita.
The Agoda data suggests that Indian travelers are expanding their horizons, moving beyond traditional city explorations to embrace Japan’s diverse landscapes and experiences. Fujikawaguchiko, Hakone, and Sapporo have gained traction for their scenic beauty and leisure offerings, while Okinawa and Fukuoka are drawing visitors with their cultural and coastal experiences. This shift highlights a growing preference among Indian travelers for destinations that combine relaxation with cultural discovery.
Commenting on the trend, Gaurav Malik, Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent & Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, said, “Japan’s mix of modern cities, cultural heritage, and natural beauty is striking a chord with Indian travelers like never before. While Tokyo remains a favorite, Osaka and other destinations are quickly gaining popularity. Families are enjoying theme parks, couples are finding romantic escapes in Kyoto and Hakone, and groups of friends are opting for leisure getaways in places like Okinawa. At Agoda, we are making it easier to plan these journeys end-to-end with options for flights, stays, and curated experiences across Japan.”
Industry observers note that increased flight connectivity, simplified visa processes, and a growing appetite for experiential travel are driving the trend. From Tokyo’s bustling neighborhoods to Kyoto’s cultural immersion, Hakone’s relaxing hot springs, and the breathtaking landscapes around Mount Fuji, Japan is positioning itself as a must-visit destination for Indian tourists seeking everything from short breaks to extended holidays.
