Air India to Cease Operations at Silchar Airport from May 31, Ending Nearly 70 Years of Service

Air India has announced the suspension of all flights to and from Silchar Airport, with the final service scheduled for May 31, 2025, bringing an end to nearly 70 years of continuous air connectivity to the Barak Valley region. The service, originally initiated by Indian Airlines in 1955, has been a key link for travelers from southern Assam and adjoining states to major cities like Kolkata and Delhi.

While the airline has not provided an official reason for the decision, industry experts attribute the move to recent operational shifts and heightened security concerns under the ongoing nationwide ‘Operation Sindoor’, which has disrupted commercial aviation across several routes.

Affected passengers are being advised to contact Air India for refunds, rescheduling, or alternate travel options. The announcement has disappointed regular flyers, local businesses, and residents who depended on Air India for reliable connectivity.

Although IndiGo continues to operate limited flights, including the Mumbai–Silchar route, concerns are growing about reduced seat availability and potential travel disruptions due to Air India’s exit. Local stakeholders have raised alarms over the likely impact on regional accessibility and economic growth, as Silchar Airport remains a vital transport hub for the Barak Valley and neighboring regions.
