AirAsia Aviation Group is set to launch over 30 new routes in 2025, marking its full recovery and reinforcing its position as the leading low-cost airline in ASEAN. With a focus on enhancing regional and domestic connectivity, the airline is optimizing its network to cater to high-demand destinations such as India, China, and key ASEAN markets.
As AirAsia moves toward finalizing its proposed acquisition by AirAsia X Berhad, the consolidation of short- and medium-haul operations will strengthen its network, cost efficiency, and operational synergies. The airline’s strategic priorities for 2025 include cost leadership, flight frequency optimization, and improved operational performance across key markets, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia.
By Q2 2025, AirAsia plans to complete its network optimization, increasing flight frequencies on high-demand routes while exploring new routes to meet growing intra-Asia travel demand. The expansion aligns with easing visa initiatives in markets like China, India, Thailand, and Malaysia, catering to evolving travel trends.
AirAsia Malaysia recently announced a new route to Australia, with four weekly flights to Darwin starting June 27, 2025—becoming the first airline to offer direct Kuala Lumpur-Darwin connectivity. Additionally, AirAsia Indonesia’s inaugural Bali-Darwin flight on March 22, 2025, further strengthens the Northern Territory’s connection with ASEAN.
Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, emphasized the airline’s focus on balancing growth with profitability in 2025. He highlighted the increase in Fly-Thru services, with traffic expected to grow from 4.3 million in 2024 to over seven million in 2025, accounting for 10% of total passengers. Supported by 16 aircraft reactivations and 14 new deliveries, AirAsia will add 1,700+ weekly return flights and 323,336 weekly seats across the group by year-end.
With 234 narrowbody aircraft in operation, AirAsia aims to fully restore pre-pandemic capacity by the end of 2025. The airline’s mega hubs in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Bangkok-Don Mueang (DMK) will continue to anchor Fly-Thru growth, currently handling 95% of Fly-Thru traffic.
Committed to building mega hubs and expanding Fly-Thru services, AirAsia is positioning itself as a global low-cost network carrier, connecting ASEAN to the world and the world to ASEAN.
