Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh has announced the State government’s plans to establish golf courses across Andhra Pradesh, with a major project proposed for Amaravati. The move is aimed at promoting tourism and attracting golf enthusiasts to the region.
The announcement was made during the concluding ceremony of the ‘Vizag Open Golf Championship 2024,’ held last week at East Point Golf Club (EPGC) in Visakhapatnam. Organized by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), the event saw participation from golfers worldwide, showcasing Andhra Pradesh as a potential hub for professional golf.
Minister Durgesh, who distributed prizes to winners Angad Cheema, Amand Art, and several others, emphasized the State’s commitment to developing golf infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of the East Point Golf Club, located in East Point Colony, as the only fully-equipped golf course in Andhra Pradesh since the state’s bifurcation, calling it a point of pride for the State.
“There is a pressing need to develop more golf courses across Andhra Pradesh, not only to enhance tourism but also to foster a love for the sport within the region,” Durgesh stated. He added that the proposed golf course in Amaravati will be a key part of the State’s broader tourism strategy, aimed at bringing international events and players to Andhra Pradesh.
Durgesh praised the efforts of the organizing committee members, including M.S.N. Raju and Ramakrishna, and noted that events like the Vizag Open help elevate the profile of Visakhapatnam and Andhra Pradesh on the global stage. “By hosting such international tournaments, we are putting Andhra Pradesh on the map for professional golf, which in turn will help boost local tourism and create new opportunities,” he said.
The State government’s push for new golf courses, particularly in tourist-friendly locations, is seen as a strategic move to diversify Andhra Pradesh’s tourism offerings and attract visitors from across the globe.
