Asia-Pacific continues to lead global travel in 2025, with eight of the world’s top 15 trending summer destinations, according to Mastercard Economics Institute’s Travel Trends 2025 report. The study, based on anonymized transaction data and third-party sources, shows that travelers are increasingly driven by meaningful experiences, wellness, and value-for-money choices amid economic uncertainties.
Japan Leads, Vietnam Rises
Tokyo and Osaka are the top two global destinations for summer travel, thanks to a surge in demand. Vietnam’s Nha Trang makes a notable debut, gaining popularity for its beaches and nightlife.
China and India Power Outbound Travel
China remains the world’s largest outbound travel market, with growing interest in visa-friendly, affordable destinations like Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore. Meanwhile, India set a new outbound travel record in 2024, with favorites including Abu Dhabi, Hanoi, and Bali—boosted by better flight connectivity and a rising middle class.
Experiential Travel Takes Center Stage
Travelers across Asia-Pacific are prioritizing culinary delights, nature, and wellness. Gianyar (Bali), Queenstown (New Zealand), and Thailand stand out for their food scenes and wellness retreats, while New Zealand is seeing increased wellness-driven travel.
Sports and Currency Shape Decisions
Major sports events like the Australian Open and the Baseball World Series are boosting international spending, especially among fans. A weaker Japanese yen significantly increased inbound tourism, particularly from China and Singapore. Indian, Singaporean, and South Korean travelers also showed strong sensitivity to currency shifts when choosing destinations.
Business Travel Shifts, Fraud Concerns Rise
Business trips are fewer but longer in duration—U.S. travelers to Asia-Pacific now average 10.2 days per trip. Meanwhile, travel fraud spikes by up to 28% during peak seasons. Mastercard is using AI-powered tools and digital wallets to enhance traveler security.
David Mann, Chief Economist, Asia Pacific at Mastercard, emphasized that, “Travelers today are seeking intentional, value-driven experiences. Asia-Pacific continues to inspire global travelers, driving resilient tourism and economic growth.”
