Assam is setting a new benchmark in healthcare and medical education, with plans to establish more than 60 medical colleges statewide by 2035, positioning itself as a leading destination for both health tourism and the training of future medical professionals. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this transformative vision, supported by a comprehensive INR 357 crore project to bolster residential and academic infrastructure. These efforts directly address the state’s historic shortage of doctors and elevate Assam’s appeal to global healthcare investors.
Recent initiatives—including the appointment of 500 new doctors and the inauguration of several new medical colleges—are already easing staffing gaps and improving patient care. The state’s strategic goal is to graduate at least 1,500 new MBBS doctors annually by 2030, supported by enhanced infrastructure in key districts such as Jorhat and Tinsukia, as well as by the expansion of Assam Medical College into a centre of excellence for critical care.
Major private healthcare brands like Medanta and Ambuja Neotia are investing significantly, with new five-star hotels and 1,000-bed hospitals underway in Guwahati and Borjhar. These not only serve Assam’s local population, but also position the state as a premier health tourism destination in Eastern India.
To further empower the next generation, Assam has introduced foreign language training for nursing students, paving the way for lucrative job placements abroad. Ongoing collaborations with countries including Japan, South Korea, and the UAE promise salaries of INR 1 lakh to INR 2.5 lakh per month for skilled healthcare professionals trained in Assam. With its forward-thinking reforms and robust infrastructure development, Assam is on track to become an international supplier of highly qualified medical talent and a top choice for medical tourism.
