Booking.com Rolls Out AI-Powered Car Rental Tools as Road Trip Demand Surges

Booking.com has unveiled a new suite of AI-driven innovations aimed at simplifying the car rental experience for travellers, as global demand for road trips and self-drive holidays continues to rise ahead of the peak travel season.

The company’s latest upgrades include a new ChatGPT-powered conversational search feature that allows users to describe their travel needs in natural language — such as “automatic SUV in Mallorca” — and instantly receive tailored rental options that can be booked seamlessly through the platform.

In another major enhancement, Booking.com has introduced an AI Car Rental Helper designed to answer common traveller queries related to insurance, payment methods, fuel policies and vehicle pick-up procedures. Available in multiple languages, the tool aims to reduce customer confusion, support requests and last-minute rental issues.

The platform has also launched AI-generated review summaries, condensing thousands of customer reviews into quick insights focused on factors such as cleanliness, service quality and pick-up convenience, helping travellers make faster and more informed booking decisions.

To further streamline the user experience, Booking.com has upgraded its search functionality with smarter filters, including options for automatic transmission, seating capacity and unlimited mileage — features particularly relevant for families and long-distance road travellers.

The announcement comes at a time when road trips are witnessing strong global momentum. According to Booking.com, 26% of travellers are planning road trips in 2026, with spontaneity, flexibility and cost savings emerging as key drivers behind the trend.

Industry experts believe the move signals a broader shift in the travel sector, where AI is increasingly being used not only for trip planning but also for reducing friction across the traveller journey. Car rentals have long been considered one of the more complex segments of travel booking due to confusing terms, insurance concerns and vehicle pick-up challenges.

With these latest innovations, Booking.com appears to be positioning itself beyond a traditional OTA model and moving toward becoming an AI-powered travel companion capable of assisting users from trip discovery to on-ground travel management.
