In a major boost to Rajasthan’s aviation and infrastructure sector, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the development of a Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will execute the project at an estimated cost of INR.1,507 crore.
Kota, situated on the banks of the Chambal River, is widely known as the industrial capital of Rajasthan and has earned national recognition as India’s leading educational coaching hub. To support its growing industrial and educational prominence, the Government of Rajasthan has already transferred 440.06 hectares of land to AAI for the project.
The upcoming Greenfield Airport will be designed to handle A-321 type aircraft and will feature a modern terminal building spread over 20,000 sqm, capable of accommodating 1,000 peak-hour passengers with an annual handling capacity of 2 million passengers. Key facilities will include a 3,200m x 45m runway, apron with seven parking bays, two link taxiways, an ATC-cum-technical block, a fire station, and a car park along with other allied infrastructure.
The project holds critical importance for the region as the current Kota Airport, under AAI ownership, is limited in capacity. With a 1,220m runway and a small 400 sqm terminal handling just 50 peak-hour passengers, it is suitable only for smaller Code ‘B’ aircraft and cannot be expanded further due to land constraints and surrounding urbanization.
Once operational, the Greenfield Airport at Kota-Bundi is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, cater to anticipated passenger traffic growth, and support both industrial and educational sectors, positioning Kota as a major hub in Rajasthan’s aviation map.
