Chandigarh Launches Master Plan to Boost Tourism with Cultural Circuits and Eco-Friendly Focus

The Chandigarh Administration has unveiled a comprehensive tourism master plan to position the city as a leading urban destination by integrating heritage landmarks, natural attractions, and modern sites into cultural circuits.

Upgrades are already underway, including modernization of the Rock Garden and city gardens, along with the development of a digital museum at the Le Corbusier Centre to showcase the city’s iconic architectural legacy. The plan also emphasizes eco-tourism and cultural tourism, promoting activities such as trekking, boating, cycling, and lake tourism, alongside festivals, exhibitions, and cultural performances.

Tourism officials said the initiative will not only enhance visitor satisfaction but also create sustainable economic opportunities while preserving Chandigarh’s unique identity envisioned by Le Corbusier.

While Chandigarh welcomed 15.63 lakh domestic visitors and 44,132 foreigners in 2019, foreign arrivals dipped during the pandemic. Recovery is now visible, with 2024 recording nearly 10 lakh domestic tourists and 39,058 foreigners the highest since the pandemic. With support from schemes like Swadesh Darshan, the Administration aims to significantly scale up both domestic and international tourism, strengthening Chandigarh’s profile as a vibrant blend of heritage and modernity.
