Civil Aviation Ministry considers renaming 22 airports following state proposals

The Civil Aviation Ministry announced earlier this week that it has received requests from 10 state governments to rename 22 airports across India. In a written response to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol stated that airports are typically named after the city in which they are located. However, state governments can propose specific names, which must be backed by a resolution from the state legislative assembly.

Once a proposal is submitted, it undergoes a review process in consultation with other ministries and departments before being presented to the Union Cabinet for final approval. The proposed changes reflect a mix of cultural, historical, and regional significance.

Here are the details of the states involved and their respective proposals:

·  Andhra Pradesh: Proposals to rename three airports, including changing Tirupati Airport to “Sri Venkateswara Airport.”

·  Bihar: The proposal to rename Darbhanga Airport as “Vidyapati Airport.”

·  Haryana: One airport is proposed for renaming.

·  Karnataka: Four airports are on the list for renaming.

·  Madhya Pradesh: One airport is proposed for a name change.

·  Maharashtra: Proposals to rename five airports, including changing Shirdi Airport to “Shree Sai Baba International Airport.”

·  Manipur: One airport is proposed for renaming.

·  Punjab: One airport is on the list for renaming.

·  Uttarakhand: One airport is proposed for a name change.

·  Uttar Pradesh: Four airports are proposed for renaming.

The final decision on these proposals will be made by the Union Cabinet after thorough consultation and review.
