In 2024, Digi Yatra, a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI)-based platform utilizing face biometric technology for seamless, contactless airport experiences, achieved significant milestones that are transforming air travel in India. Launched in December 2022, Digi Yatra began with three airports in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi, and has rapidly expanded to 24 airports across the country. The platform has registered over 9 million active users, with an average of 30,000 app downloads daily, facilitating over 42 million journeys, underscoring its growing acceptance among passengers.
Suresh Khadakbhavi, CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation, highlighted 2024 as a pivotal year, noting that the company has not only advanced technologically but has also worked hard to build trust among users. Through a series of communication and social media campaigns, Digi Yatra addressed concerns about security and explained its decentralized ecosystem based on Self Sovereign Identity (SSI), setting new standards for data management. In the coming months, Digi Yatra plans to add four more airports by early 2025 and expand its footprint internationally.
One of the year’s key developments was Digi Yatra’s partnership with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to launch the ‘IATA One-ID X Digi Yatra India’ initiative, a step towards creating a seamless end-to-end international travel experience. This collaboration marks the beginning of Digi Yatra’s efforts to extend its platform globally, with trials for foreign passengers holding e-passports planned for June 2025. Digi Yatra also made significant strides in improving customer experience through updates to its app, including better biometric solutions and a smoother registration process.
Another highlight of 2024 was the launch of the d-KYC (Don’t Know Your Customer) campaign, which emphasizes the platform’s commitment to user privacy by ensuring that no personal data is stored or accessed. This initiative further solidifies Digi Yatra’s reputation as a responsible player in the digital identity space.
By March 2025, Digi Yatra plans to support all 22 official languages in India, making the app more accessible to a diverse range of travellers. As it prepares to expand both domestically and internationally, Digi Yatra is setting its sights on creating a more integrated and secure global travel ecosystem.
