Domestic Travel Surges as Indians Rediscover Hidden Gems in 2026

India’s travel landscape is entering a new chapter, with domestic tourism set for a
strong upswing in 2026. According to Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report, Indian
travellers are showing a clear shift toward “inward wanderlust” — choosing cultural
depth, lesser-known destinations, and meaningful experiences within the country.
The report reveals that 35% of Indian travellers intend to explore more within
India than abroad, up from 25% last year. Lower costs, fewer crowds, and authentic
experiences are driving this renewed enthusiasm for secondary destinations.
Indian travellers are also prioritising more purposeful travel:
67% seek relaxation
28% prefer adventure and outdoor activities
26% are motivated by cultural exploration
India remains the region’s most spiritually driven market, with a growing interest in
pilgrimages and reflective journeys.

Value continues to strongly shape decisions — 47% plan to spend ₹5,000 or less per
night on accommodation. Shorter, meaningful getaways are also becoming the norm,
with most trips spanning 4–7 days, primarily with family (40%) or partners (34%).
Agoda notes that this shift toward domestic exploration — strengthened by AI-driven
planning and a desire for deeper cultural connection — will significantly influence
India’s travel economy in 2026.
