Asam is set to redefine road travel and conservation near Kaziranga National Park with a major highway upgrade between Jakhalbandha (Nagaon) and Bokakhat (Golaghat). The current road, running along the park’s southern boundary, forces wildlife to cross busy lanes during seasonal floods, often causing accidents.
To address this, authorities will construct a 34.5 km elevated corridor across sensitive areas of Kaziranga, upgrade 30.22 km of existing roads, and build 21 km of greenfield bypasses. The elevated stretch will allow animals to move safely while maintaining smooth traffic flow, marking a landmark step for wildlife-friendly infrastructure.
The corridor will also connect major highways, railway stations, and airports, enhancing access to tourist destinations, cultural sites, and regional trade hubs. Expected to generate over 34 lakh person-days of employment, the project promises to boost local livelihoods while protecting Assam’s unique biodiversity.
This initiative ensures that Kaziranga’s wildlife can roam safely, even as tourism and regional connectivity flourish — a win-win for conservation and development.
