The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is considering the introduction of annual and lifetime FASTag toll passes for private vehicle owners to streamline highway travel and reduce the hassle of frequent recharges. Currently in the proposal stage, the new passes would be integrated into the existing FASTag system, offering cost-effective and convenient options for long-distance commuters.
Under the proposed system, a one-time FASTag recharge of ₹3,000 would enable private vehicle owners to access all national highways, state expressways, and other toll roads without additional charges for an entire year. This would significantly reduce the need for regular FASTag recharges and minimize congestion at toll plazas. A dual-payment model is also being explored, allowing users to choose between an annual pass and distance-based toll pricing.
The government has reportedly dropped an earlier plan for a lifetime FASTag pass priced at ₹30,000 with a 15-year validity. Meanwhile, for occasional travelers, a distance-based toll system is being proposed, with a flat rate of ₹50 per 100 km, following a “pay-as-you-go” model.
Existing FASTag users will not be required to create new accounts or submit fresh documentation to opt into the new system. The proposed annual pass would operate seamlessly within the current FASTag infrastructure.
According to The Times of India, the new toll pass system aims to replace traditional toll booths with GPS and sensor-based digital toll collection, enabling real-time automated deductions and barrier-free travel. Currently, private vehicle owners can buy a monthly pass worth ₹340, totaling ₹4,080 annually, but it is valid only at a single toll plaza. The proposed system would offer nationwide coverage and is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of toll collection in India.
