Georgia Introduces Mandatory Health and Accident Insurance for Tourists from January 1, 2026

In line with Georgia’s Law on Tourism, the country has introduced a mandatory health and accident insurance requirement for all foreign tourists, effective 1 January 2026.

Under the new regulation, all international visitors entering Georgia must carry a valid health and accident insurance policy covering the entire duration of their stay, including both arrival and departure dates. Tourists may present the policy in physical or electronic form, and the document must be available in Georgian or English.

The insurance policy may be issued by either a Georgian or an international insurance provider. However, the minimum coverage must not be less than 30,000 Georgian Lari (GEL).

Authorities have specified that the insurance policy must include mandatory details such as the parties to the insurance contract, covered territory, subject of insurance, commencement and expiry dates, insured risks, coverage limits, and premium payment terms. The policy must remain valid for the entire period of the visitor’s stay to ensure continuous coverage.

The Georgian government has clarified that certain categories of travellers are exempt from the mandatory insurance requirement. These include holders of diplomatic and special visas, holders of diplomatic, official, service, and special passports, accredited staff of diplomatic missions and international organisations along with their accredited family members, individuals entering Georgia under international treaties and agreements, and drivers engaged in international road freight and passenger transportation.

The move is aimed at strengthening tourist safety, healthcare preparedness, and regulatory compliance, while aligning Georgia’s tourism framework with international best practices.
