Goa is preparing to host Chikhal Kalo 2025, one of its most culturally vibrant and spiritually enriching festivals, from July 5 to 7 at the historic Shree Devki Krishna Temple in Marcel. Organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, the event highlights the state’s unique monsoon traditions and is a major feature of Goa’s “Beyond Beaches” campaign, drawing locals and tourists alike into its immersive cultural embrace.
Deeply rooted in Goan folklore and spirituality, Chikhal Kalo celebrates the divine mischief of Lord Krishna and his companions through traditional mud games and rituals. Over the years, the festival has evolved into a dynamic expression of Goa’s intangible heritage and communal spirit. This year’s festivities will begin on July 5 (Dashami) with a traditional Goan vegetarian cooking competition, followed by devotional performances under the theme ‘Nachu Kirtanache Rangi’ and ‘Vitthalvaari’, featuring renowned artists such as Mugdha Gaonkar, Hrishikesh Sane, and Kedar Dhamaskar.
A formal inauguration ceremony will lead into a soulful devotional music concert by Dr. Bharat Balvalli, with acclaimed artists including Pandit Makrand Kundale and Amar Oak, setting a spiritually vibrant tone for the celebrations. On July 6, Ashadhi Ekadashi will be observed with an intimate Bhajan recital inside the temple, reflecting the deep devotional roots of the festival.
The grand finale on July 7 (Dwadashi) will see hundreds gather for the iconic mud-play – the true essence of Chikhal Kalo – with participants of all ages engaging in games such as chendu fali (mud ball) and khushti (wrestling), all set to the rhythm of traditional Goan instruments like the ghumot and shamel. This lively display of unity and cultural pride has become a major draw for tourists seeking authentic, offbeat experiences in Goa.
Tourism Minister Shri Rohan A. Khaunte emphasized, “Chikhal Kalo exemplifies the essence of Goa’s spiritual and cultural identity. It connects us to our roots and supports our vision of regenerative tourism, where heritage and tradition enrich the visitor experience.” Echoing this, Director of Tourism Shri Kedar Naik added, “Through events like Chikhal Kalo, we are showcasing Goa’s rural and spiritual diversity, inviting the world to experience the state beyond its beaches.”
The Department of Tourism invites all to be part of Chikhal Kalo 2025 a joyous celebration of devotion, tradition, and community, bringing to life the spirit of Goa like never before.
