Guwahati has emerged as the fastest-growing destination for international tourists visiting India, according to Agoda’s New Horizons ranking. This annual list, which evaluates accommodation booking trends over two years, highlights Guwahati’s rise to prominence as a gateway to the Northeast, offering a unique blend of nature, culture, and modern amenities. Known for its connections to Kaziranga, river cruises, and wildlife sanctuaries, Guwahati’s increasing appeal is driven by improved connectivity and its status as a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) hub.
The broader Northeast region is also experiencing a tourism boom, thanks to its cultural festivals and high-profile events. Popular festivals like the Hornbill Festival, Ziro Music Festival, and Shillong’s Cherry Blossom Festival draw visitors, alongside global music acts such as Boney M, Akon, and Ed Sheeran, who is set to perform in Shillong in February 2025.
For domestic travelers, Puri has become a trending destination, celebrated for its spiritual and cultural significance. The revered Jagannath Temple attracts pilgrims year-round, while Puri Beach offers a serene coastal escape. The combination of religious heritage and natural beauty has propelled Puri’s popularity among Indian tourists.
Internationally, Langkawi in Malaysia is gaining traction among Indian travelers. This archipelago of 99 islands captivates visitors with its pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and local charm. Malaysia’s introduction of visa-free travel for Indian tourists has further enhanced Langkawi’s accessibility, making it an ideal blend of relaxation and adventure.
Krishna Rathi, Senior Country Director India at Agoda, remarked on the destinations’ growing appeal: “Guwahati, Puri, and Langkawi are resonating strongly with travelers. Guwahati’s rapid rise into India’s top 20 international visitor destinations is remarkable, while Puri and Langkawi continue to enchant with their unique offerings.”
Globally, Shanghai leads Agoda’s New Horizons list for emerging Asian destinations, followed by Jeju in South Korea, Paris, Nha Trang in Vietnam, and Fukuoka in Japan.
