The High Commission of Sri Lanka in India commemorated this year’s Vesak festival with a number of religious activities on May 23 (Thursday). This year’s Vesak celebration also marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution, which granted international recognition to the Day of Vesak acknowledging the significant contributions that Buddhism has made to the world for over two and a half millennia.
“People following Buddhism religion world over on the full moon day commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing of Lord Buddha. In addition, the religious and cultural ties are of historical importance for India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. Lord Buddha was born in Lumbini, attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and attained Parinirvana in Kushinagar. Sri Lanka received the message of Buddhism from Emperor Ashoka of India,” said High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India, Kshenuka Senewiratne while addressing guests assembled at the High Commission as part of Vesak celebration. A ‘Dana’ programme was organized in New Delhi on the occasion too.
In the evening, a Pahan Puja (offering of light to Buddha) was inaugurated by the High Commissioner at the High Commission and oil lamps, colourful lanterns were arranged to illuminate Vesak Day.
