Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated a range of water sports activities at Gobind Sagar Lake in Mandi Bharari, Bilaspur, on Tuesday. The launch of cruises, shikara rides, houseboats, hi-tech motorboats, jet skis, and water scooters marks a new chapter for tourism in the region, bringing in fresh opportunities for economic growth.
Highlighting the significance of this initiative, the Chief Minister said that these water sports will not only enhance the tourism potential of the area but also provide ample employment and self-employment opportunities for local youth. He emphasized that the program is expected to benefit local businesses, especially women and small entrepreneurs, by creating new marketplaces for selling local products. “It will enhance the income and foster economic stability of the people of the region,” said Sukhu.
During the event, the Chief Minister outlined his vision for Bilaspur as a vibrant tourism hub, stating, “With the development of water sports, alongside initiatives in religious, rural, and eco-tourism, Bilaspur is poised to become a premier attraction, comparable to popular destinations like Kerala and Goa.” He stressed that these efforts will elevate Bilaspur’s standing on the Himachal Pradesh tourism map, creating diverse experiences that showcase the district’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and adventure opportunities.
As part of the state government’s broader tourism strategy, Kol Dam reservoir will soon be added to the list of water sports venues, with the Bilaspur district administration instructed to begin the tender process for cruises and shikara rides. Sukhu also announced the development of a 30-kilometer scenic cruise route from Harnoda in Bilaspur to Tattapani in Shimla, offering tourists a unique travel experience along the Kol Dam towards Shimla.
In a symbolic show of support, the Chief Minister personally experienced the water sports activities by taking a thrilling jet ski ride and later enjoying a scenic cruise on the lake. Interacting with media representatives, he noted that the Congress government has been focused on promoting tourism since taking office, and these initiatives in Bilaspur have been launched ahead of schedule.
Sukhu reiterated that tourism is a priority sector for his government, with efforts underway to promote green industry and attract investment. Himachal Pradesh, known for its numerous water bodies, holds significant potential for water sports activities, which are now being explored to boost tourism and local livelihoods.
