Marking a momentous milestone in its illustrious journey, the Hotel and Restaurant Association (Western India) – HRAWI celebrated its Platinum Jubilee with a grand Awards Ceremony during the 20th Regional Convention in Mumbai. The evening brought together industry legends, thought leaders, and dignitaries to honour the stalwarts who built the foundation of India’s hospitality sector.
The ceremony saw actor Boman Irani felicitating all Past Presidents of HRAWI for their remarkable contributions to the Association’s growth and to Indian hospitality at large. Dr Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, presented the Lifetime Achievement Awards to Dr Ajit B. Kerkar, President of Honour, and Mr Vivek Nair, Member of Honour, for their unparalleled service to the industry. Mr Jimmy Shaw, President of HRAWI, received the award on behalf of Dr Kerkar.
Recollecting his own beginnings in hospitality, Boman Irani shared,
“My first job was as a waiter at The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai. From washing dishes in the basement to serving guests at the iconic ‘Rendezvous’ rooftop restaurant — it taught me humility, discipline, and the value of service. Each of these leaders we honour today embodies that same spirit — excellence through perseverance.”
Delivering a keynote address that blended insight and inspiration, Dr Shashi Tharoor described the hospitality industry as “the mirror of a nation’s soul.” Linking it to India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, he called for action on three key pillars — Image, Infrastructure, and Immigration — to unlock India’s tourism potential.
“Tonight isn’t just about honouring pioneers — it’s about celebrating 75 years of an industry that has created livelihoods, welcomed the world with open arms, and continues to define India’s global identity,” said Jimmy Shaw, President, HRAWI.
Tracing its roots to the leadership of J.R.D. Tata, HRAWI has, over seven decades, evolved into one of the country’s most influential hospitality bodies, representing hotels and restaurants across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Union Territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. Through advocacy, skill development, and policy dialogue, the Association continues to shape the future of the western region’s hospitality landscape.
