India Sees 21.4% Rise in Visa Applications, Mahakumbh Drives Global Spiritual Tourism

India has witnessed a 21.4% surge in inbound travel for spiritual purposes, according to Atlys, a leading visa processing platform. The Mahakumbh, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, has been a significant driver of this growth, attracting an estimated 42 million pilgrims, including many international visitors. Held once every 144 years, the Mahakumbh is a magnet for global spiritual seekers, with nearly 48% of spiritual travel visa applications linked to major events like this and other religious festivals.

Travelers from the UK and USA account for a significant share of these applications, highlighting global interest in India’s rich spiritual heritage. Interestingly, millennials now dominate this trend, with 66% of the segment being women, showcasing a shift toward female-led spiritual exploration.

Mohak Nahta, Founder and CEO of Atlys, emphasized the evolving appeal of spiritual tourism: “The Mahakumbh and similar festivals are no longer limited to traditional pilgrims; they are drawing a diverse audience seeking meaningful experiences that blend adventure and self-discovery.”

Group travel applications have also surged by 35%, reflecting a growing preference for communal spiritual journeys. Destinations like Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Haridwar remain top choices for visitors. To accommodate this rising demand, local authorities have bolstered infrastructure and accommodations around key spiritual sites, ensuring a seamless experience for international travelers.
