In a heartening move, the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), the Bus & Car Operators Confederation of India (BOCI), and the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) have designated January 24 as “Drivers’ Day” to honor the crucial role of drivers in the transportation and tourism sectors.
The Indian Tourist Transporters Association (ITTA), represented by President Satish Sehrawat and Hon. Secretary K.S. Sawhney, has expressed excitement about being part of this initiative. ITTA, recognized by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has been a leading national body since its establishment on March 2, 1989. Known for providing premium transportation services to international tourists, the association collaborates with tour operators, travel agents, and hotels to offer luxury vehicles for high-profile events, including state visits and mega events like the G20.
Highlighting the significance of drivers as ambassadors of tourism, ITTA has consistently invested in driver development. Notable initiatives include:
- A comprehensive one-week training program for over 1,700 drivers during the Commonwealth Games and again in 2013.
- Plans to conduct regular training programs in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism.
- Recognition of outstanding driver performance, with 10 drivers honored during ITTA’s 5th Convention.
- Efforts to finalize an agreement with a leading insurance company to provide group insurance coverage for drivers.
To mark this occasion, ITTA, with full support from the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), has announced its first Driver Training Schedule for 2025. The training will take place on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. This initiative underscores ITTA’s dedication to promoting driver welfare, safety, and professionalism, further enhancing India’s tourism and transportation sectors.
