India ranks as the second most sustainability-conscious travel market in Asia, with 82% of Indian travelers factoring sustainability into their 2025 travel plans—significantly higher than the Asian average of 68%, according to Agoda’s 2025 Sustainable Travel Survey. The study, conducted among over 6,000 respondents across 11 Asian markets, highlights a growing shift towards authentic, eco-friendly, and responsible tourism.
Indians Prioritize Meaningful and Responsible Travel
The survey reveals that 24% of Indian travelers choose sustainability due to personal values and beliefs, while 21% prioritize authentic and purposeful tourism. The findings indicate a rising trend of travelers seeking experiences that benefit both local communities and the environment.
To minimize environmental impact, Indian travelers are adopting eco-conscious habits such as:
- Off-peak travel (21%) to avoid overcrowding.
- Sustainable accommodations (16%) with eco-certifications.
- Using public transport, biking, or walking (16%) instead of private vehicles.
- Packing reusable items (16%) like water bottles to reduce waste.
